Gestalt theory
Theories about how people perceive the world around them are known as GESRAIL THEORY.These principles focus on simplifying complex scenes and perceiving shapes as a single unified form.

PRINCIPKE OF SIMILARITY: The eye tends to perceive similar elements in a design as complete picture shapes/groups, even though the elements are separate, the brain connects them.
Fig 2.1 Principke of Similarity(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

PRINCIPLE OF CONTINUATION: The human eye follows the lines and curves of a design preferring to see continuity of visual elements.
Fig 2.2 Principke of Continustion(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

PRINCIPLE OF CLOSURE: When people perceive visual elements as incomplete, they will form complete shapes by filling in missing information; the eye prefers to see complete shapes.
Fig 2.3 Principke of Closure(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

PRINCIPLE OF PROXIMITY: The process of ensuring that related design elements are placed together in such a way that unrelated items are spaced apart, closely approximated, identifying that the items are interconnected or related, and become a visual unit that helps to organize or provide structure to the layout.

PRINCIPLE OF FIGURE/GROUND: An object instinctively perceived as foreground or background, either standing out in front or receding to the background.
Fig 2.5 Principke of Figure/Ground(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

LAW OF SYMMETRY & ORDER: Elements that are symmetrical to each other are often perceived as a unified group, similar to UNIFIED GROUP. Objects that are symmetrical to each other are more likely to be grouped together than objects that are asymmetrical to each other.

Contrast
I think contrast is to highlight the subject we think is the most important to form a harmonious picture, we can use contrast to make the picture interesting and vivid, emphasize the key information and expression of the whole picture. We can use the OPEN COLORS, VALUE LIGHT / DARK, DIRECTION HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL, etc. to enhance the contrast, so that the artwork can attract other people's attention at the first time.
Applications include but are not limited to: movies, posters, interior design and architecture.
Fig 2.7 Contrast(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Emphasis
Emphasis is the work used to create dominance and focus in your work, and you can use a variety of elements, such as colors and shapes, to create an effect that flanks the dominance.
Fig 2.8 Emphasis(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Balance
Balance refers to the distribution of visual centers in a design work; it is the visual balance of these elements that makes the whole picture appear balanced. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE: Equal "weight" on both sides of the center pivot point; Equal arrangement of elements on both sides of the central axis (horizontal/vertical) to form a symmetrical balance; Equal arrangement of elements around the center point to achieve radial balance; Approximate symmetry refers to the arrangement of equal, but not identical, forms around the pivot line.
Fig 2.9 Symmetrical Balance(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE: The composition is unevenly weighted; one side of the composition may contain an important element, while the other side has several or minor elements; the composition is more dynamic and interesting, and the expression is more modern; the asymmetrical balance is intended to provide more visual variation and visual centers, but may be more difficult to implement due to the excessive number of elements and the complexity of the relationship.
Fig 2.10 ASymmetrical Balance(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

THE GOLDEN RATIO: The Golden Ratio is a numerical concept and a number of infinite extensions; the Golden Ratio is regarded as a representation of perfection and has been used as a guide for the visual balance of architecture and painting, bringing about a harmonious equilibrium and structure, as well as increasing the attractiveness of the work.
Fig 2.11 The GGolden Ratio(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

RULE OF THIRDS: This is a compositional guideline that can make a work more dynamic; divide an image into three equal parts, either horizontally or vertically, and then place the subject of the picture at the intersection of the dividing lines.
Fig 2.12 Rule of Thirds(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Repetition
The repetition of elements in the design work creates rhythm and cadence, and variety is essential to keep the rhythm exciting and active and to avoid monotony, with patterns enriching the surface with interest and adding visual stimulation.
Fig 2.13 Repetition(15.02.2024-Week 2)  (1) Pinterest

Movement
Designed to guide the eye into, around, through, etc. in a way that composes a path that is observable to the eye, motion/movement in a visual image is when objects in a visual image seem to move; motion in a visual image comes from the variety of shapes, forms, lines, and curves that are used.
Fig 2.14 Movement(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Harmony & Unity
Harmony refers to the selection of elements that share the following common characteristics; without the slightest variation, harmony becomes monotonous; Harmony refers to the fact that all the elements can be blended together, e.g. in line with the same theme, aesthetic style and mood.
Fig 2.15 Harmony(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Unity refers to the repetitive use of specific elements, such as colors, shapes, materials, etc., throughout the design to make the whole work one; when these elements are combined in a balanced way, a sense of unity is created, which results in a theme; "unity" and "harmony" are very similar. Unity" and "Harmony" are very similar, but not the same in the design process.

Fig 2.16 Unity(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

Symbol
Symbols can also be used to represent within, shapes, objects, or other things, and in design, symbols can even provide or convey information equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even an entire story.

PICTORIAL SYMBOLS: Image-related Sketches
Fig 2.17 Pictoriall Symbols(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

ABSTRACT SYMBOLS: Abstract symbols are like representations of their objects with less detail.
Fig 2.17 Abstract Symbols(15.02.2024-Week 2)(1) Pinterest

ARBITRARY SYMBOLS: Symbols are invented based on constructed meanings, and many are based on geometric shapes and colors.

Word and Image
Imagery is an important part of design work, and it is important to use the right kind of imagery to resonate with a concept or brand. It is important to choose the right and relevant images for the design. The text that goes with the image also needs to be appropriate and correct, which will deepen the meaning of the design. The right fonts and font strategy will give the design a visually rich and balanced look.

United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals(UNSDG)

Fig 3.1 UNSDG(22.02.2024-Week 3)17个进球 |可持续发展 (un.org)

Adopted in 2015, the UNSDG provides a common purpose for peace and prosperity for humanity and the planet now and in the future, centered on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call to action for all countries in a global partnership. This includes major limb themes such as poverty, pollution, equality, ecology and climate change.

Option:  14 LIFE BELOW WATER
Fig 3.2 Climate Action(22.02.2024-Week 3)Goal 14 | Department of Economic and Social Affairs (un.org)

I have chosen the 14th of the 17 SDGs, LIFE BELOW WATER, Its theme is the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources for sustainable development. It is here to protect the oceans and marine resources, small islands and to promote sustainable development. I think the most important thing is to put an end to marine pollution, protect the sea and marine resources, and give marine creatures a suitable living environment.

Art/Design Work

I searched the website PINTEREST for some poster artworks related to my chosen theme, but unfortunately I didn't find much information about the author, a series of content related to the year of the artwork. I chose a total of four designs and I finally chose the one that best fits my theme to analyse.

Title of work:Encroach on Culture
author:Yu-Ci Ye
vintages:2019

Observe:
I finally chose the third one as my final poster, the author says: Zooming in on Japan's whaling culture, these works take a stand for whale conservation. The posters associate the image of a living whale with specialties like sake, sushi and oden. The posters associate the image of a living whale with specialties like sake, sushi and oden. While the proportions in the pictures imply that the marine mammal is at the mercy of man, the truncated shapes of eating utensils are not. While the proportions in the pictures imply that the marine mammal is at the mercy of man, the truncated shapes of eating utensils invite viewers to fill the space outside the posters with their imagination. A red circle on white background, reminiscent of the Japanese flag, is a perfect example. A red circle on white background, reminiscent of the Japanese flag, establishes a link between blood and the whaling nation Japan, aiming to fundamentally question this type of consumption. consumption.
But to me, it's not just about the culture of whaling, and it's not just about taking a stand to protect whales. It also represents a kind of excessive harm that people do to the creatures of the sea, where marine mammals are constantly being caught and put on the dinner table, suggesting that the destruction of the marine ecology is closely related to the whole ocean. Therefore, I think this work is also in line with the 14th item of my choice, LIFE BELOW WATER, we should be good to the ocean, protect the marine environment, instead of doing excessive harm to the ocean, which reminds me of the endangered marine life, but people still risk to catch them and make them into all kinds of objects or food.

FEEDBACK
Week1: Dr. YIP talked to us online about our tasks for this short term in 2024, explaining in detail what we need to do for task1, task2 and Final task respectively. task 1 needs to look at Dr. YIP's courses and PDFs online, which we will learn from, and then complete our blog.

Week2: This week Dr. Zhong continued to explain to us what we should do in task 1, and told us what we need to write in our blog, every point was told to us, we need to write design principles about our own understanding, analysis, and bring pictures, and then choose a topic to analyse in UNSDG. In the one-on-one, the teacher checked our blogs in detail and told me what I was missing and what I should fill in.

Week3: This week we showed our blogs to the teacher in one-on-one and he told me that I should find links to the images I found and put them in our blogs and that I chose the images and I explained them, but that the explanation should be explaining the relationship between the posters I chose and my theme, not analysing the specific design elements in my posters, which was the task for task2.
At the same time the teacher told us that we should explain the design principles inside the poster in task2, and in task3 we should find the works of the same author, similar or from the same series.

Self-reflection
The first week was online and the teacher explained the whole course to us in detail, in the second week the teacher checked our blogs about task1, in the third week the blogs were checked again and we were told about task2, I think I was too slow every time I went up to the teacher one to one, this would lead to a lot of wasted time on my part by not having a way to check it again for the teacher after I had finished revising it. I will try to correct this problem in task2.

Sources of inspiration
Based on the video and documentation provided by Dr. Yip, I went over some of the foundations of design principles. And I chose the images from PINTEREST at the beginning, but because the website was so complicated inside, I had a hard time to get a series of works from the same author from it, and then I hit my attention to Little Red Book, but it was also confusing, many of them carrying the works, and I couldn't find the real authors, which didn't meet the requirements of task1. Then it occurred to me that I could look at some design competitions and then select some works from them, and I could also know the real author; and get information about the work, the reason for creating it, the background etc.
