INSTRUCTIONS

Lectures

Project 1 : Proposal Development
In the semester of 2025, there is no plan to study abroad, so everyone will attend the class together. According to Mr. Mohd's instructions, we have divided four numbers according to different majors in different semesters. We need to establish a team of six people and cooperate as a team to complete the tasks in this module. In addition, there can be no more than 3 people in each team with the same number, so my friend ZHIWEI and I quickly found a teammate. They are LIN CHENYI, LI ZEXING, LONG BOJIANG, LU YIHENG. We are the fourth group.

Week 1
Mr. Mohd released the theme that we need to design and think about: everyday design.
Fig. 1.1 Theme
Week 2
This week, we put forward some ideas according to the theme of everyday design. The initial idea is tea culture, lantern culture and vase, each two people is responsible for one, and put forward why we want to study this.
Tea Culture -CHENYI, ZEXING
Lantern -LINA BOJIANG
Vase -ZHIWEI, YIHENG
The lecture of the second week is onling, and we learned some information in it. In the class on Friday, I found my tutor, Mr.Zeon, and asked him which of our three directions was better, and got good feedback, which brought us confidence in the following research.

Research for proposal

Week 3
In the third week, Mr.Zeon formed a whatsapp group for the team leaders to facilitate our timely consultation and communication, and arranged a meeting time after class on Friday in the group. We were the second group.
We showed our slide to Mr.Zeon, who gave us some practical suggestions, explained our task and what we could do next in detail, and provided a lot of effective information.
After the meeting, according to Mr.Zeon's suggestion, six of us held a centralized meeting to modify the slide.

Final proposal:
  • 200 word definition and explanation
  • Cite as evidence of research
  • 3 sketches and preliminary ideas
  • Visual reference
  • Reference list

Presentation:
  • Maximum duration of video presentation - 10 minutes.
  • All team members are required to speak on tape.
  • Make sure all requirements are met
  • The recorded video must be submitted with the PDF presentation.

Project 2 : Data Collection Methods
The students are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artefact and material.
Some of the methods by which you can collect data:
• Observation study.
• Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, you may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if you deem their presentation useful for further research).
• Online and/or actual physical material* visual research of the selected area (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.)

Week 4
This week is a public holiday, we have no classes, but this week is a good time for our data collection. We have done a lot of things in different division of labor this week, and everyone has different tasks, but they are all for data collection.
In addition, on Friday, Mr.Zeon held a meeting with each of our groups in teams and gave us very specific and detailed feedback and suggestions.

Venue: Red House Wedding Accessories洪源喜庆之家
Location :  212, Jalan Pasar, 14000 Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang, Malasyia

We found a lot of Malaysian lantern makers on the Internet, so we found a handmade lantern shop in Penang and Li Zexing went alone to conduct the interview.

Interviewee :

Into the Hongyuan Festival home, as if you are in a jubilant celebration, the red atmosphere of the lantern and the festival here each other. The hand-made lanterns exude charming charm, swaying gently in bright red and gold, each a masterpiece of lantern art, filling the entire space with festive warmth. From the ornate palace lanterns to the exquisite silk lanterns, every corner is filled with the hope of joy and unity.

Interview questions:
  1. How long have you been making cellophane lanterns?

  2. Does your craft run in the family?

  3. What is the main production process of cellophane lanterns on the market now?

  4. What do you think is the most time-consuming step in the production process?

  5. Are there any special rules when choosing materials? Do you have the best cellophane or bamboo strips?

  6. Do craftsmen refer to traditional patterns or specific meanings when designing lanterns?

  7. What do you think are the classic lantern shapes? Do different shapes mean different things?

  8. What do you think is the biggest difference between modern lanterns and traditional cellophane lanterns?

  9. What is the special significance of cellophane lanterns in Malaysian culture?

Week 5
Data Compilation / Anaysis / Data Collection / Survey From

During the week, I completed the questionnaire alone, designing the direction of the dragon related to the theme of our topic. Key a is whether people know about lanterns, and key two is what people think about traditional lanterns and redesigned lanterns

Survey Tool:
Questionnaire survey is a quantitative research method, mainly used to collect a large number of respondents' feedback information for statistical analysis. We chose Google froms as the collection tool, and Google froms can be easily shared with participants or respondents via links, which allows more people to access the questionnaire and helps improve the reliability of the collected data.

Survey distribution
Links to the survey will be posted via social media, such as Instagram.
Wechat, WhatsApp.
  • Survey release active period: 2/3/2025 (Sun) - 7/3/2025 (Fri)
  • Current survey responses:  30  responses

Week 6
Visual References/ Final project sketches/ Buying materials:

Visual References
Our visual effects sketches are based on some redesigned lanterns, which are references to more specific shapes and patterns.

project sketches

Buying materials:
1. Soft bamboo braid is used to weave the lamp body    Lazada

2.The lantern body is made of rice   Shopee

3. Wicks with replaceable batteries      Shopee

4. Brush, for painting    Shopee

5. Glue is used for sticking bamboo sticks, rice paper and cellophane    Shopee

6. Garden shears can easily cut through bamboo skewers     Shopee

7. Bamboo strips are used to make lamp handles   Lazada

Week 7
We have redrafted the lantern:

Sketch 1, we see lanterns hanging in many Chinese restaurants. We searched the Internet for many ways to weave them and chose one that weaves them in a staggered manner. We woven a cylindrical lantern with bamboo strips, painted it white, pasted rice paper on it, and drew a new one with red paint after it dried.

Sketch 2, We refer to the shape of the Tang sachet. We first fixed a five-sided or hexagonal sphere with wire, wrapped it in white rice paper, drew a pattern on colored paper, cut it out, and finally pasted it according to each grid.

Sketch 3, 1-3 Let's make a lantern in the shape of a fox, and 4 is a three-dimensional snake around a circular light. The round lamp is made of tissue paper and white glue. 5 is a three-dimensional snake made of white paper. 6 is tissue paper cut into stars. Coated with white glue, embossed, sealed, dried and wrapped round the lamp, forming a three-dimensional shape on the outside.

Sketch 4, We mentioned the light and shadow of three-dimensional books. Lanterns can also be cut into different shapes of paper and stacked layer by layer to create new light and shadow. We thought this one was special, even though it's not

The lecturer chose the second draft, which resembled a lantern of a sphere.

Make lanterns, make videos
I tried a lot, trying to use disposable chopsticks, disposable barbecue picks and toothpicks, but all failed.

Then we took a new approach and used film, transparent film. The transparent film is cut into a pentagon, and the hot melt glue is cleverly used to connect it. Form a complete spherical structure. Then, traditional designs are drawn on rice paper using markers, pasted on transparent film, and light strips are installed inside. Let the light through the film.

Because of the limited technology, we didn't make a 32-sided sphere, we made a 12-sided sphere, and then I punched two holes in the top film, and then I made a handle to get a hand-held effect.

Then LIN CHENYI and I made the slide for this presentation according to our existing materials and the survey done by our project2.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 1Mr. Mohd showed us what to do throughout the class.  Ms. Anis then shared her presentation and slides. Then we team up in class.

WEEK 2:In the second week, after the answer on Mr.Mohd online, on Friday, Mr.Zeon suggested that we choose lanterns in tea culture, lanterns, and vases, because this is also common in Malaysia.

WEEK 3:Mr. zeon explained in detail what we should submit this week, what changes we should make to our ppt, and how we can achieve better results

WEEK 4:Mr. zeon said that the Week3 submission focused too much on modern lanterns and everyday design, and that we should pay more attention to the meaning and cultural connotations of lanterns. And pay attention to detail. At the same time, I was told about what project2 needs to do.

WEEK 5:Mr. zeon said that after reading our word files this week, we have almost everything we need, but we still lack some spiritual and cultural aspects, such as slide, which gave a speech today. We should write down the spiritual aspects and study how to convert them into design aspects.

WEEK 6:Thinking about how knitting comes about, what's special about it
How to combine the previous data, how to use in the design
Start with the sketch, produce more sketches, make changes to the weaving method, and integrate into the lantern according to the data
How to break through this: not like a basket, more like a lantern
It can't just be a flat surface, how it fits into the vine.
Just make a pretty picture, how do you combine it with the basket
How does that extend to this look
Understanding how research and project2 data can serve as inspiration and combination
Think about how to make a sketch of the data
With a different sketch design, put the weave in
Draw the knitting method as well
What knitting methods are borrowed from
Need to have a reference, the previous, modern designers have this weaving method
How does it work here
Then learn from it to make it
Background culture The approach to modern design is somewhat lacking

WEEK 7:We need to redesign the lantern, be more careful in the way we weave it or whatever.

REFLECTION
Experience:Throughout the process, we should work as a team and everyone should actively talk and contribute their ideas, rather than working individually. At the same time, the comprehensiveness of the study is relatively convincing for the proposal, and we need to have enough reasons to support it. It was a very valuable experience and promoted my growth. It was also a very difficult journey to lead the team, and I will do my best in the future.

Observations:I observed that we need more visual references to express the intuitiveness of the proposal, which made me understand the importance of images, people can intuitively understand your feelings. And provide more information for your research.

Findings:At the same time, I find the importance of feedback. Most people do not see their own path clearly and need to be reminded by others. Lecturers play a good role in this process, and the continuous optimization of the team can continue to move forward. In addition, I found that it is very difficult to study traditional culture and integrate it into modern cultural design, and we should learn to balance the information between the two. So this study not only deepened my understanding of lantern culture, but also made me think more clearly.
